Gotta go into work tomorrow and see what my options are, but it's looking good to me since otherwise I won't be going home before Christmas.

Really? God, with as bad as it is, I would think a lot of businesses would be closed right now.

It's really just not bad where we are, it's the eye of the hurricane. No smoke around us except in the distance, no wind, no ash falling. So there is no reason to close businesses around me at this time.

Weird. I think that my friend's office burned. Craziness.

Fires are terrible - be safe Marianne
I remember the Ash Wednesday fires here in 83. They started in Adelaide and migrated well into Victoria stopping short of hitting Melbourne (imagine the fires started in San Diego and migrated all the way up to San Francisco and that's the magnitude of what we're talking about). We have bush fires every year and sadly there are a lot of sick fucks out there who start them. I know it's no consolation to the devastation they are causing but, according to news reports we are getting here, they started by power lines falling down. |

I haven't heard from my cousin yet.
I heard back from Zephyr. He lives near the beach so he says he's okay but going to Las Vegas tomorrow for some much needed fresh air. I haven't heard back from my other friend, Lisa. ![]() "The watch is a lot easier to get off and on than a wedding ring." John Mayer, In Style Magazine, Aug. 2006. |

Because of the fire at Camp Pendleton, I-5 is closed in both directions and they have suspended Amtrak services between Oceanside and San Juan Capistrano. I guess I'm staying in San Diego.

I just read that it looks like maybe things are slowing down a bit?

Maybe relatively speaking, but a bunch of new ones popped up overnight and everything is still pretty horrible here. The Harris fire has gone crazy, and the fire at Camp Pendleton is not doing good either. The Witch fire at least seems to have died down.

FYI, if you look at the map in the first post, I live near the I-8 and I-15 interchange, so as you can see, I'm still pretty far away from everything.

Well, looks like I need to bring this guy back, with an edit in the title.

They are currently far out of harms way and have plenty of stuff from our house (and all our pets), so technically everything will be fine, but we're talking about the house I lived in my entire life before I moved down here, and I am feeling somewhat materialistic about it right now. I'm going to be up all night freaking out.

Jesus, mer. That's so scary. Keep us posted.
I'd be freaking the fuck out over a house too, so don't feel materialistic. |

Just talked to my mom, they still aren't allowed back into the neighborhood but no houses burned last night. The map hasn't been updated since last
night so I'm not sure where the fire perimeter is right now but it seems that the firefighters made a stand last night and were able to save all the houses
in the fire's path. Today is looking better than yesterday, now that it's light out again, they can get the planes back up.

That's great news, Mer. I was wondering how your house was faring yesterday. Thank god for hot firemen.

Parents went home today, hoping they let them stay. Winds are supposed to pick up tonight but not as bad as they were on Thursday or yesterday. Still no homes
burned, a few out houses on larger properties.
The Governator showed up today at the evac center where my parents were getting an update. Weird to see pictures of Arnie walking around the high school gym.

Are you fucking for serious?
http://www.independent.com/news/tea-fire/ This time, my parents are just fine because they live outside town, where the last fire burned, but now, downtown Santa Barbara is in SERIOUS danger of going up in flames. Can't catch a break here.

Holy crap. That's so sad and scary, Mer. I don't think I could deal with constant fires where I live.
